For many members of our OPHS family, it’s not a difficult question — whether you’ve adopted a pet from our shelter or supported our lifesaving programs, we all want to ensure our four-legged friends are loved and cared for. In the spirit of supporting you and your pets, OPHS is introducing a new tool to give you peace of mind...
No matter your age, estate planning is something everyone should consider — especially if you are a pet owner. Too often we see pets left to fend for themselves because their owner didn't have a plan in place. By writing a will, you can ensure the people and animals you love are always protected. This tool makes the process accessible, secure and easy for all. It takes 20 minutes or less to complete and is totally free. It’s a result of our partnership with FreeWill, which over 170,000 Americans have used to write their legal wills.
Giving Through a Will or Trust
Bequests
A bequest is an act of giving personal property or financial assets such as stocks, bonds, jewelry and cash to an individual or organization through the provisions of a will or estate plan.
Any bequest you choose to leave to Olympic Peninsula Humane Society (OPHS), should best suit your personal objectives.
In your bequest, you can state a specific dollar amount you wish to leave, give property, or decide on a certain percentage of the remainder of your estate (the amount that remains after paying all debts, costs, and other prior legacies).
You may also earmark your gift to be used for general support of our work or for a specific purpose you designate.
A bequest is right for you if...
You wish to help ensure Olympic Peninsula Humane Society's future viability and strength
You are comfortable delaying immediate income-tax deduction in favor of long-term planning
You wish to not affect your current cash flow
If you wish to designate a restricted gift...
You may give your gift for restricted use or specifically to support a particular program or service we provide such as earmarking to care specifically for dogs, cats or to designate funds for emergency medical care.
Because of ever-changing financial needs of charitable organizations, advisors often recommend that restrictions be described, avoiding detailed limitations, and be as broad as possible.
The more limited the restrictions of a bequest, the more important it is to add a provision like the following:
"In the event that such use should prove to be impossible, impracticable or undesirable for any reason as the Trustees may determine, in their sole discretion, they shall then provide for alternative use of the funds in a manner consistent with and reflecting the spirit of the original gift."
A bequest made through a provision in your will or revocable trust:
Is easy to arrange
Will not alter your current lifestyle in any way
Can easily be modified to address your changing needs
May be given to honor the donor or memorialize a loved one
Gifts From Retirement Plans
If you designate the remaining balance of a retirement plan to a beneficiary other than your spouse, the IRS will tax the remaining balance if it is the largest asset remaining in your estate. This tax is in addition to the estate tax that may be imposed on the account. The result of this additional tax could be up to 70 percent of the value of your retirement plan.
Naming Olympic Peninsula Humane Society as the beneficiary of your retirement plan may be right for you if you wish to leave other assets that are not subject to income tax to your heirs. Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, being a qualified 501(c)(3), will not pay income tax on a gift of remaining retirement plan funds.
A Retirement Plan gift is right for you if...
You have a retirement plan such as a 401(k), IRA, or other qualified plan
You want to ensure the most efficient distribution of the assets in your estate and prefer to make a gift to us through your estate plan while balancing your giving between family and Olympic Peninsula Humane Society

General Language Examples
Specific Bequest
You may name Olympic Peninsula Humane Society as a beneficiary of a specific amount from your estate. This is called a specific bequest.
"I give to the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society - Federal Tax I.D. number 91-6001724, located at 1743 Old Olympic Highway in Port Angeles, WA 98362, the sum of $_____ to be used as its Board of Directors deems advisable for the benefit of animals in its care."
Residuary Request
A residuary bequest comes to Olympic Peninsula Humane Society after your estate expenses and specific bequests are paid. It allows you to designate Olympic Peninsula Humane Society as the recipient of all or a portion of the residue of your estate.
"I give to Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, Federal Tax I.D. number 91-6001724, located at 1743 Old Olympic Highway in Port Angeles, WA 98362, (the residue of my estate / _____% of the residue of my estate) to be used as its Board of Directors deems advisable for the benefit of animals in its care."
Contingent Request
A contingent bequest enables you to name Olympic Peninsula Humane Society as an alternate beneficiary of all or of a portion of your estate, which means Olympic Peninsula Humane Society will receive the bequest only if your primary beneficiary or beneficiaries do not survive you.
"If __________ is not living at the time of my death, I give to Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, Federal Tax I.D. number 91-6001724, located at 1743 Old Olympic Highway in Port Angeles, WA 98362, (the sum of $_____ / the residue of my estate / _____% of the residue of my estate) to be used as its Board of Directors deems advisable for the benefit of animals in its care."
Property Bequest
"I hereby give to Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, Federal Tax I.D. number 91-6001724, located at 1743 Old Olympic Highway in Port Angeles, WA 98362, the property herein described to be used as its Board of Directors deems advisable for the benefit of animals in its care."

Thank you for considering a vehicle donation to the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society! OPHS is able to sell donated vehicles to add to our ability to fund the care for animals in need in Clallam County.
For assistance with a vehicle donation, please contact us at:
360-457-8206 or email info@ophumanesociety.org and place the words "Vehicle Donation" in the reference line.
Why should I donate my vehicle to the OPHS?
It’s Easy!
You will feel great knowing your donated vehicle will directly help the animals here at OPHS. As we are funded by private donors and organizations and are not affiliated with any other local or national animal welfare organization, nor do we receive any direct state or federal funding, OPHS relies on the generosity of people like you to sustain our services.
Your gift will be used efficiently. Because we manage this program ourselves, there are no “middleman expenses.” Therefore, your vehicle’s sale price goes to OPHS with the exception of direct costs such as processing DMV paperwork.
What vehicles does OPHS accept?
The Autos for Animals program accepts running donated cars, trucks, camper trailers, tractors, motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, RVs, boats, jet skis, and even planes!
Camper/travel trailers and boats are accepted based on condition.
How does Autos For Animals work?
It’s easy and convenient:
Call us to set up a day and time for pick-up (if needed) and to begin the process. We will need the title (signed over to Olympic Peninsula Humane Society), keys and the vehicle.
OPHS will notify the DMV and send a donation acknowledgment to you.
Once the vehicle sells, an official tax receipt is mailed to you acknowledging your charitable deduction.
How is the DMV notified?
If you supply complete VIN and plate numbers, OPHS will notify the DMV that your vehicle has been donated. Once your vehicle has been sold, the DMV is notified who purchased the vehicle.
We recommend that you contact the DMV to let them know the vehicle was donated if the vehicle is titled in a state other than Washington.
If you are donating a boat, it is recommended that you contact the State Marine Board to notify them you have donated your vessel to OPHS.
What if I can’t find the vehicle title?
We may be able to help. The vehicle must be owned outright. Proof of ownership such as vehicle registration or a DMV print out may be requested.
How much can I claim for this vehicle donation on my taxes? How do I do that?
The IRS allows for vehicles with a value of less than $500 to be claimed for the fair market value. Higher value vehicles are claimed for the sales price and you will need to provide us with your social security number for the required IRS tax form (1098-C) so that it can be issued.
Steps Involved
Immediately after receiving your donated vehicle, OPHS will mail an acknowledgment letter providing proof that you donated your vehicle to the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, an eligible 501(c)3 charitable organization.
After the vehicle sells, a tax-receipt/letter will be mailed to you stating the amount for which the vehicle was sold. If you want to claim a charitable deduction for a vehicle that sells for more than $500, we will need your social security number so that an IRS tax form 1098-C can be issued. For additional guidance on vehicle donations, visit www.irs.gov and see publication
4303.
Can I deliver my vehicle to OPHS?
Yes, and as we have a small staff, this is preferred! Please feel welcome to deliver your vehicle to the either shelter campus. Please call (360) 457-8206 to arrange the vehicle surrender process so we will be available to help you.
Did you know you can shop right from your computer and donate the much needed items that our animals require? From basic cleaning supplies to dog chews and kitty treats: we've compiled our wish lists and posted them to the websites below. We appreciate your thoughtfulness! Don't forget to keep your receipts as those are tax deductible.
The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society graciously accepts items that can be auctioned or raffled off at our events for fundraising purposes. These items help us greatly, not only to create a festive and inviting experience for our attendees, but allow us to raise the funds we need to care for our animals.
Additionally, we are delighted to accept dog food, cat food, kitty liter and gently used pet items to help keep our animal guests comfy and entertained.
We cannot accept medications, and/or items that are not directly associated with animal care.
If you have goods or services that you can donate for this purpose, please contact our office at 360-457-8206

Why charitable stock gifts might be right for you
If you donate appreciated stock directly to charity, you do not incur capital gains tax. And when you give a gift of appreciated stock, it’s both fully tax deductible and over 30% more valuable than if you’d sold it and then donated the after-tax earnings. It’s a no-brainer, win-win way to support the causes you care about.
